Seed Food & Wine Festival

“The Seed Food and Wine is not just a festival, we are a movement, a community of ideas and passionate people committed to elevating the conversation around plant-based foods, sustainability, conscious living, vegan living and the welfare of animals.” (for more info please see https://www.seedfoodandwine.com/ )

Luckily, the festival also offered a free run and yoga before opening the doors for their main event on Saturday. I did have time to set up the yoga video since is a time lapse and easily to edit/finish.

This is how the class looked like.

Late TBT for 5 de May-o

Yes, 5 de Mayo was yesterday, it happened on a Thursday and it was just the perfect day for this post but I missed it! So, I will be doing it anyways…today!                                                          I know most of you reading this might still be a bit drunk from last night but here it is, for the fun!

Back in 2011, the One and ONLY Run Club, hosted at Mister R’s on Lincoln Rd in South Beach every Thursday 7pm, had a theme run for the ‘mexican day’, where all runners got together to find the Unicorn Pinata somewhere around South Beach! Costumes were not required but it’s always part of the fun!

Want to watch what happened?

Croquetas & Champagne SOBEWFF2016

Thanks to SouthBeachTopChefs.com , I could attend SOBEWFF once again and this year, the event was serving one of my favorites ‘latin food’ very popular in Miami: Croquetas – with a side of champagne, the 3 hour event was something…                                                          I will stop talking so you can watch some highlights of that lovely Saturday night at the Paradise Plaza, Palm Court / Midtown.

2.to outdo or exceed in excellence, elevation, extent, degree, etc.;surpass; excel.
3.Theology. (of the Deity) to be above and independent of (the universe, time, etc.).
In Miami, Transcend means Yoga.
Yes, the fabulous TranscendMia Yoga event happened  again! And  this time, Yogis were on the sands of Miami Beach, few days after the New Year’s intense celebrations.
Here is a short video from that magical morning few weeks ago. This was the best way to start 2016, It was wonderful!

Yoga – The Backwards Saga to become a Yogi

DCIM112GOPROG6823641.

I don’t really know why it started. One day, I saw someone doing a Shirshasana on a paddle board when I was just chillin at the beach. Seeing that  made me think – “How hard it could be to do a headstand on a paddle board?”  Well… I had to figure that out alone and  I decided to try it right there!  Never done such a thing before!!!!!! My friend looked at me with that face of ‘ what the heck are you doing’ but I didn’t care. I know, we were in a public beach, with a bunch of people around, I was wearing a bikini… but I was also very curious to find out If I could ever do it. Curiosity KILLS me all the time. If I think I can, I will give it a TRY. And I did. No shame. Failed every single time. That was just the beginning of the Saga, around February of 2014.                                                                                            If you wonder why I call it SAGA, I will try to explain. When I first did a headstand, I was again in public, I stayed up in position for about 2-3 seconds, (just to take a photo). My pose was wrong: shoulders not in triangle position,  my legs were open, I could not keep my balance for too long. Over all, I was trying to do something that, one usually learn how to do it when they are about to master the yoga, after years of practicing yoga.   As usual, I was once again doing something I had no idea. And I used to post photos with this special hashtag #IDoNotDoYoga or #ImNotAYogaPerson. (Yep… you can check my instagram, you will find the photos under those tags).  How many times people saw me doing headstands and they said – ‘wooooow that’s some yoga master!’ And I used to answer right away, still upside down – ‘I don’t do yoga!’ – Anyone’s face would just look very confused with my answer. – How in this world can you possibly learn “this”  without attending yoga?     Believe and it will happen, that is all I say. After about 5 months, I decided to get a yoga mat and start to practice and train how to do a headstand at home. By that point, a very nice friend told me how to position the arms and shoulder correctly and also told me to keep legs together and toes ponting.  My intention was to first, use a wall in order to keep my balance and not fall. Guess what happened? I never used the wall!!  I set up my gopro camera that day, so I could get some nice fail videos of my headstands but that never happened. When the headstand happened,  I figured how to hold and keep balance. And slowly I started to do different poses, moving legs and sometimes the hips too. And of course, after getting confidence that I could really do this, I started to do headstands everywhere! At the beach, at the park, at the track, pharmacies… and you name it, I’ll do it and I don’t care about my surroundings.

Joining the Run Club group, I got to meet lots of healthy and nice people. (WARNING – Just know,  those people tend to change your mind and convince you to do things you have never done before! – It happened to me, true story) Anyways, I knew that, at one point, I would ended up changing that hashtag and practicing some Yoga for real.  And  so it happened. One day, someone said: put down the camera today, I need you to enjoy this class. And I followed. It was really hard to reach for my toes and do some other poses that usually looks very simple but it’s actually really hard!  but I did not give up. And the worse happened: it’s addictive. So, I kept attending yoga, I found that every yoga class is different. Some are relaxing and easy, others are more intense and difficult. After all, it’s all Yoga right? So where are those names from?

I started to figure it out after I was invited to have 30 day free pass for a new Yoga Studio in Wynwood (Love Life Wellness Center) and here is what I am learning or better,”figuring it out”, how Yoga can be different.

DCIM110GOPROGOPR0614.
Love Life Wellness Center – Nirvana Room (Hot Yoga)

Here is a list with a few yoga styles and their names. (the following information was found at – http://www.mindbodygreen.com/0-8622/14-styles-of-yoga-explained-simply.html )

Anusara: Anusara is often described as Iyengar (a purist form of yoga) with a sense of humor.

Ashtanga: Six established and strenuous pose sequences. Ashtangis move rapidly, flowing from one pose to the next with each inhale and exhale. Each series of poses linked by the breath this way is called a vinyasa.

Bikram: Bikram features yoga poses in a sauna-like room. The heat is cranked up to nearly 105 degrees and 40 percent humidity in official Bikram classes.

Hatha: “hatha” encompasses nearly all types of modern yoga.

Iyengar: Appropriate for all ages and abilities, Iyengar yoga is all about precise alignment and deliberate sequencing.

Jivamukti: A physical, limit-pushing practice that reintegrates yoga’s traditional spiritual elements in an educational way for Western practitioners.

Kripalu: Kripalu is a three-part practice that teaches you to get to know, accept, and learn from your body.

Kundalini: The practice of kundalini yoga features constantly moving, invigorating poses. The fluidity of the practice is intended to release the kundalini (serpent) energy in your body.

Prenatal: Yoga postures carefully adapted for expectant mothers.

Restorative: Less work, more relaxation. You’ll spend as many as 20 minutes each in just four or five simple poses. There’s also psychic cleansing: the mind goes to mush and you feel brand new.

Sivananda: An unhurried yoga practice that typically focuses on the same 12 basic asanas or variations thereof every time, bookended by sun salutations and savasana.

Viniyoga: A highly individualized practice in which yogis learn to adapt poses and goals to their own needs and abilities. Vini actually means differentiation, adaptation, and appropriate application

Vinyasa / Power:  Power yoga doesn’t stick to the same sequence of poses each time like ashtanga does, so the style varies depending on the teacher. Classes called “vinyasa” or “flow” in your gym or studio can be vastly different but in general stem from this movement and from ashtanga as well.

Yin: A quiet, meditative yoga practice, also called taoist yoga. Yin focuses on lengthening connective tissues and is meant to complement yang yoga—your muscle-forming Anusara, ashtanga, Iyengar, or what have you. Yin poses are passive, meaning you’re supposed to relax muscles and let gravity do the work. And they’re long — you’ll practice patience here too.

Woof! Are you still there? These are just some of the Yoga Styles, I guess the most popular ones. But I know there are a lot more (and you can find more info online like I did.)

Now, If you ever decide to take a ‘shot of yoga’ one day, I also recommend: let the instructor know if it’s your first time (they love to know that and they will do their best to make you feel comfortable during the class).Be concentrated and focused in yourself during the class, everyone around you are probably focused on themselves and believe me, nobody cares if you are doing something ‘different’. You might get some help from the instructors to fix your pose but usually not from another yogi. How many times I was  ‘lost’ in the position and nobody ever told me anything? a bunch! Nobody is there to judge you or anyone else so focus! I also practice a lot of yoga in open places like parks and malls. Obviously, you will have lots of eyes watching you in this case, but remember, they may not do yoga and also can’t tell if you are doing anything ‘different’ (I say different to not say the word wrong, cause there is nothing wrong in yoga) Beginners or Masters, we are all in process of learning in each class.

See you at the next big yoga events around Miami. You never know where I will pop-up next!

PAMM Invasion with BHSF Brickell Run Club

Every tuesday at 7 pm, if you live or work around Brickell, you know you will need some patience at that time of the day. Hundreds of runners get together for a 5k run for fun. It’s not a race but definitely feels like one. When you see the amount of ‘buddies’  taking over the streets of Brickell towards Downtown Miami, one might think – This is Insane! And I say, yes it is and it’s also great to be part of this ‘insanity’ for the past few years. Tuesday July 28th, BRC started as usual but it ended in a different place : The PAMM – Perez Art Museum Miami.

I do not want to talk about the invasion but I would like you to check these images and guess it for yourself.

Gym Hopping – Intense Fitness Life in 14 days

This might be the first time I will be actually writing on this blog. If you look, everything I post are photos or videos and sharing some links, but no writing at all. I call it ‘wordlessblog’  but today, I will feed you some words.

On the first day of July, I was invited (or maybe dared, you will figure it out at one point) to be part of this ‘project’ to work as photographer/videographer for a new brand. The job – cover sports events. The challenge – that might include taking some classes and filming everything possible. hmmmm…..

— I started running back in 2010 when I was overweight and hopeless. Running have put me back into shape over the years, BUT I do not have that ‘fitness frame of mind’, I take classes for charity once in a while, I take a free yoga anytime I get a chance, but that – is – it. I am not a  long distance runner ( half marathons happens once a year), not a fast runner, no gym on my schedule, nothing else. My runs includes talking, walking, photographing and lots of jogging, about 5 miles distance, from 1 to 5 days a week.  I don’t have visible muscles, I do look skinny and my  real strength is 0.-

The first requested event was to run a 5k, witch was not a problem at all. I am used to do this, easy pie. Also, I was supposed to attend the Run Clubs available in town and that happened during the first week of July.

Than, I had that request – Can you sign up for a 14 day trial with ClassPass.com ?

What the H… is a class pass? I was thinking in my head – where the hell did I get into? – Anyways, ended up to find out what classpass.com was and here is how I am feeling about this experience.

And here we go, On July 13th,  first day  on of ClassPass, I chose 2 different studios around the area I live (just in case I decided to give up before even starting, I could run back to my house faster. But of course, that did not happened.)

First Class in the morning, a Spinning Class. I hope by now you understand that when I do some kind of “biking” is just for fun, once a year, Deco Bike… but Never taken a spinning class before. And here I am. Tripod with monopod and gopro all ready and set to get me in action. I’m not sure if it was the time of the day or the day of the week but the class happen to have only 3 girls ready to cycle. I forgot to bring water bottle, problems with beginners. Overall, it was a nice class and I felt more like a private session, since there was only 2 other girls in the room. After 60 min, I stepped out of the bike and I though: ‘ I can not walk home’ – but I did.

Spinning

In the afternoon, I had scheduled a Pilates Session. That was also new for me, I had seen my mom doing it a few years ago, but I had never done it. So I was thinking ( and expecting a little) that Pilates was a calm and easy way to stretch and exercise, since I was sore from the earlier workout, I did not wanted to abuse of my body. And of course I was wrong. Pilates is not easy at all and I found muscles I had no idea they existed in my poor body.  It was a 45 min session and I left feeling sore in other areas of my body. It also gave me a feeling of a private session since I had only 2 others in the room with me.

Pilates

The next day, the 14th, I woke up very sore and did not want to over do it, so I decided to visit a gym. I never do weights or anything serious so I went straight to the cardio room. They had a bunch of machines available, empty room  and one amazing view of the Bay that I could not get over it! Ended up running on treadmills for about 45min. Not my favorite thing to do, I would rather be running outdoors but it was nice to visit that place, I had no idea it was there and I am very happy to being able to find these “treasures” around town, but they were actually there since long time ago. Old for you, new for me.

Treadmills

On the 15th, attended a Hot Yoga class at 9am. I have done few  yoga sessions but never anything like this. The room had a heater and the class was 90min long. Also, all the yoga I have done was for beginners and this one had positions  for advanced ‘yogis’. In the end it was good, it feels like I was, some how, melting  into my mat and I was very relaxed after I got home. Not paying attention, I over booked yoga for the same day and at 3pm I was attending another class. This one, not that hard. It seemed more like the regular classes I usually take. Only one thing: first 5 min and the first plank in, I realized how hard yoga is! And I was feeling very sore and tired in 10 min of class! Anyways, did not give up, stayed in class til the end. Left really sore.

Hot Yoga

Yoga

The 16th, a Thursday, I had scheduled another Pilates class for the morning and it was not that bad as I was expecting, since I was very sore by then. This class was 60 min long and had an entire different vibe if I can say.  The class was totally different from my first pilates and I loved it. It looks easy but it will make you workout hard.  Same day at 6:30 pm,  I attended to a studio that was celebrating their 1 year anniversary with a Spinning class. This was something out of this world! The class starts normal and suddenly we are in total darkness…til the lights turn on. In red, yellow, blue, green, purple. All those colors, the music, the rhythm and the flow of the class is explainable in words. You have to attend such a thing to feel how that was. And of course, when the class was over, I was supposed to attend their party but my legs were on fire and I decided to go home for the day since I had scheduled a Zumba class for the next morning! By this day, I was feeling exhausted.

Pilates

Spinning

And yes, at 9am on that Friday the 17th, I was dancing. Dancing like no one was watching – but there was… my camera.     I took one zumba class to help a charity last year and that was it. 9 months later, sencond class of Zumba completed. You don’t want to know how bad I am on that so let’s skip it to the after class, I also had scheduled my chiropractor to ‘fix my back’ as he usually does once a week, since I also had a yoga class to be at noon. My legs and arms were very sore and I thought about giving up the yoga after 5min after starting. But, did not give up, I did not force it also, so let’s say I did some ‘lazy yoga’. The place was amazing, by the pool with incredible view of bay and Key Biscayne.

Zumba

Yoga

Since body was very sore, I decided 2 things:

1 – I can do one class per day, might consider doing 2 classes twice a week but not daily, so the following week, I will be taking one class per day.

2 – took the weekend off and did not exercise at all.

Monday the 20th, had scheduled a Hot Yoga class in another studio, this class was 60 minutes long and the instructor was a nice young girl, the class was very relaxing and I totally lost track of time, it did not feel like it was a Monday or a beginning of a new week.

Hot Yoga

The 21th, I had one of the most amazing experiences ever in this ‘fitness life’ – I had scheduled something I had seen on tv several times but I never imagined it was so amazing as it is. Anti-gravity Yoga. That is right. It’s yoga in the air, hanging. I don’t know what to say or how to describe it, it’s definitely one of my favorite classes during this intense week and I extremely recommend of course.

Anti gravity Yoga

By the 22nd, I had schedule something I had never done before and I was also curious to see if I could handle doing it, and I scheduled a Crossfit / Bootcamp class. As I thought, it was a hard and extreme to me and my weak body. I did few minutes of spinning and that was it. Since I knew the coach, he allowed me to just photograph and do the videos. Crossfit is too much for me, it looks really cool but I have some limits. and this was my last class using class pass.

Crossfit

Since  was requested to set up another account, in order to meet groups around the city, I had Class Pass canceled. Overall, I used 8 days of their 14 days offered. “Class pass is designed to help you explore tons of amazing studios and classes, challenge yourself with different ways to work out, and get you into the kind of fitness you feel passionate about.” For more info, check them out: http://www.classpass.com – I got some of my friends very curious about what I was doing and I offered them to use  the free trial.

This was a great experience and I learned a lot about new places, new people, my body limits. I am very grateful for taking this challenge. And I am ready for the next ones!

That’s all for now. Should I blog more words? I would love to get some comments if possible.
